Context
In 2017, Brazil’s political instability, marked by President Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment and corruption scandals, drew international attention. Esdi, facing a financial and administrative crisis, was invited to present its challenges at the How to Pronounce Design in Portuguese: Brazil Today exhibition in Lisbon and two European events.
Held from September to December 2017 at the Museum of Design and Fashion (MUDE), the exhibition, curated by Frederico Duarte, showcased 100 examples of 21st-century Brazilian design. Duarte’s invitation to Esdi both recognized its pioneering role in design education and provided visibility for its crisis and the support movement.
To represent the Esdi Aberta movement, students and alumni, together with the administration, designed an interactive cube with pivoting panels. The outer faces showcased Esdi’s history, while the inner panels detailed recent protests and initiatives addressing the crisis faced by UERJ.
